Viktor Nerhati in the pantheon of glory

There’s a wish in Malėsi e Madhe famous for centuries, which goes like this: “May your name be never forgotten, and may it be always remembered for generations!”. This is a wish for those sons, men and women who gave glory to our country with their work, acts and life, that’s why it is our duty to remember and honor them for they are today’s, not so happy, glory, history and pride, but also for a tomorrow surely better. Our land, like no other part of Albania, that God created since the morning of the ages, has raised men and women like a few nations and races in the world. That’s why without hesitation we don’t have to wait for decades and centuries, but to give them a place in the pantheon of glory, giving them the place they deserve in the memory of eternity. Of course, one of them is Viktor Dede Nerhati, from Pjetroshan of Kastrat. Viktor Nerhati was born on March 22, 1963, in the well-known nationalist, religious and patriotic family of Nerhati, from his (late) parents, Dede and Lule Nerhati. He was born in this house that was a gun always ready against Turkish and other invaders. The men and women of this house were distinguished not only as brave and wise but also as beauty and grace. Sometimes, when God gives these things, he takes you sooner by himself. Unfortunately, some members of the family Nerhati had this “bad luck” that hit even the late Viktor Nerhati on March 26, 2001, in the temple of freedom and democracy in the world, in the USA, where he had to emigrate in 2000, likewise many other democrats after the dark year 1997. The family Nerhati, as a family of nationalist and religious traditions, understood since the establishment of communism (after November 29, 1944) that the power that came by gun and blood-streams, caused by the national-liberation war, unfortunately became a civil war for power, the dark power on Malėsi and Albania. That’s why Viktor’s grandfather, Kol Nerhati, and his son, Nosh, didn’t hesitate to be part of the anticommunist raise of January 1945. After the fail of the raise of Malėsi e Madhe, Kol Nerhati and his son, Nosh Nerhati, had to leave to the former Yugoslavia, in order to escape the communist genocide. Yet, the communist persecution hit them even there, as the Slavic where those who gave life to the Albanian communism. In the former Yugoslavia, the tentacles of the Albanian intelligence services of that time, which where a section of the Yugoslavian UDB, made a plan to kill Nosh Nerhati and forced the anticommunist Kol Nerhati to come back in Albania. Kol was imprisoned and his family was deported in the ill-famed camp of Tepelenė, that was worse than a prison. The families of Dede Kol Nerhati and Gjergj Kol Nerhati, where the object of very long deportations and persecutions, suffered not only by those who had this bad luck, but also those who were born and grew after the deportation. The son of Ded Kola, Viktor, was part of the sufferings of the communist system, far beyond the sufferings of Christ. I say this because the communism, like paganism, had no religion, and instead of faith in the true God, wanted to impose the false gods of the communist ideology, like Stalin, Enver and other red devils. Viktor in his childhood suffered with his family the communist persecution, while the state deprived them from every human right, what in the Marxist language was called “the class-battle”. During the years of persecution, Viktor Nerhati, likewise any other anticommunist, had accumulated energy and hatred against dictatorship, therefore since the first anticommunist movement of the students in the University of Tirana, he was near to the students, heroes who were shaking the socialist castle for the first time, which wasn’t rocky, as it was said…  If the Democratic Party, the first anticommunist party, was founded on December 12, 1990, on December 13, 1990, Viktor Nerhati was in touch with the anticommunists of Shkodėr and participant in the removal of the bust of the dictator Hoxha. Viktor Nerhati was one of those young people who, along with other anticommunists led by the unique democrat, the late Dode Kaēaj, founded the Democratic Party in Malėsi e Madhe, since January 2, 1991. Viktor Nerhati was one of those inhabitants of Kastrat who, along with the battle against communism, was in the first line for the revival of faith in God. The first mass, after the atheist year 1967, was held in Shkodėr on November 4, 1990, and on November 11, there was a mass in Bajzė, and Viktor Nerhati not only was present in both events, but was also one of the organizers of the one held in Bajzė. Viktor helped also in opening the cult objects of our Muslim bothers (the Leaden Mosque in Shkodėr and that of Aliaj’s). Viktor was also participant in the meeting of January 3, 1991, in the “Isa Boletini” square in Shkodėr, as well as one of the organizers of the meeting of February 19, 1991, in Bajzė, where were present Sali Berisha and the eternal leader of democracy, Azem Hajdari. Viktor Nerhati was also one of the first malėsorė who participated in the anticommunist protest of April 2, 1991, in Shkodėr, to defend the free vote, as the foundation of democracy. With the foundation of the association of the former politically persecuted, in Malėsi e Madhe, Viktor was elected its secretary during the years 1992-1996. He also was the leader of the section of the Democratic Party in Kastrat in 1993-1998, while in 1994-1997 he also was member of the leading-group of the Democratic Party in Malėsi e Madhe. From 1993 until 2000, he was inspector of the Institute of the former Politically Persecuted for the Prefecture of Shkodėr. In 1996 until 2000, when he had to leave Albania for political motives, he was member of the Regional Council of Malėsi e Madhe… Viktor Nerhati, as one of the first democrats, was never missing a meeting or protest of the democratic forces, either in local or national lever, even though these activities were often dangerous, like that of the protests after the murder of the hero of democracy, Azem Hajdari, held on September 12, and the protests of September 14, 1998. We should emphasize that in all campaigns and elections, either political and local, there was the hand and mind of this resistant democrat with a vision. Viktor Nerhati showed dedication, honesty and tolerance in everything he did, without any motive of revenge, as he said: “We, of the persecuted, deprived from freedom, democracy, equality and human rights, given by the Creator, know the value of these rights better than anyone else, therefore it would be a sin if we would try to deprive others from these rights, even though if they are the authors of our sufferings.” Viktor Nerhati showed these qualities in practice, what made people in Malėsi respect him, without any political difference. We have a saying which goes like this: “God takes good people by him sooner than others”, and this is what happened with Viktor, for his life and work is remembered with great respect by everyone after his death, what gives strength and pride for life to his relatives, his brother and his sisters, especially to his wife, the respectful Mrs. Flutur, to educate and transmit to the son, Danadon and the daughter, Lusijana, the name and the work of their father, and to the well-known family a heritage that honors not only the family, Pjetroshan, Kastrat, but also Malėsi e Madhe. For these qualities, the Communal Council of Kastrat gave him the title of “Honorable Citizen”.

Lives destroyed in the name of Canon

The Canon of Lekė Dukagjini, this code that is still taking lives, even after 700 ears from its creation, is clearly challenging not only the laws but also the human rights. This medieval code, which should had been just in the museum, is followed by most of the Albanian areas and is relevant in taking legal decisions in the north of our country. The Media report every day sad stories realized by people, but also supported and “drugged” by the Canon of Lekė Dukagjini.

The story of a couple, that of Artur Daka, 24 years old, and Diane Kazani, 20 years old, is already a personification of the long “Calvary” in the name of the Canon, even with heavy consequences to the family of the young Daka.

As requested by the laws of the Catholic Church, the two were married in the church on August 10, 2006, in the mass held by Dom Simon Jubani, in the presence of Ejll Leka and David Leka. But their life had no normal perspective. Diane Kazani had been previously engaged to another person named Bashkim Kasemi. For some reasons, but also for the Canon of Lekė Dukagjini, the ex-fiancée, didn’t accept this relationship, even though the two swore in the house of Jesus Christe before the altar to love and help each-other in bad and good luck, until death. Kasemi started to persecute them, making their life a hell, and not only to them, but to their families too. They were continuously threatened, while there were even criminal acts against them. It went to the point that the father and the brother of Artur were shot yesterday at about 21.30 in the village of Berdicė, about 3 km from Shkodėr, while they were in their car.

The miracle of God saved them. As it was dark, they escaped running, leaving their car.

“In these conditions the life of the couple is impossible”, said Pjetėr Daka, the father of Artur Daka, who escaped miraculously to the bullets. The son and his wife life hidden now.

It is clear that a gun is ready to take the life of Artur Daka and Diane Kazani, if they come out. All this in the name of the Canon of Lekė Dukagjini, which is active even today in Albania and is held more important than the laws of the State.

The family Gjonaj, with the family Gjokaj are in enmity too. As a consequence of this emnity they’re living shut in still today. The other families in the northern town suffer also the consequences of various enmities. For many years, the family Gjoni and the family Gjokaj didn’t find a way to resolve their conflict.

Innocent victims of a crazy time

The sentence “murdered for properties” has now become daily. The demographic movements of the last sixty years, while the properties were property of the State since 17 years ago, in the post-communist period, the Law 7501, still available, distributed the land on the basis of persons, inciting conflicts between the legitimate proprietors and those who became new proprietors, a conflict that registered thousands of victims. Riza Milani, from Postrribė, in Shkodėr, on January 10, 2000, bought from Muhamet Musa Bushi five thousand meters square of land in faith, without any notarized document, what it is common, as they had a bad house in that land, of the family Bushi. But Bushi broke the promise and wanted the land back. There’s a conflict that cannot be closed neither by the Commune, nor by the elders, so Riza Milani starts a new building, for according to him and the declaration of the mayor Faz Shabaj, he was right. Muhamet Bushi got angry, he took his two sons with guns and stops the work forcedly. Riza Milani and the workers avoided the conflict and left. The building thus was pulled down. A little later, on March 5, 2997, Sejdi Milani, the father of Riza, kills Muhamet Bushi for revenge. The two families were in enmity with each-other. Now there was the Canon of Lekė Dukagjini between them. The family Milani are closed in, as it is common. We have an official document in our journal, of the elder of the village Domen, B.M. and the mayor F.Sh., proving the facts that we are publishing.

The sons of Riza Milani, Artan Milani, very young, born in August 25, 1986 and Artur Milani, even younger, born in January 26, 1990, were mostly in danger, and they lived shut in from March 5, 2007 until December 20, 2007. The gun was ready to shot on them. Yet they found a way to leave the country. Today they live somewhere without address and in open conflict. Artan and Artur, likewise many of their age, are innocent victims of crazy time, whose life is in danger, in the name of the medieval codes.
