The freedom of Gjon Gjelaj is violated

The local elections of October 12 violated the freedom of all the Albanian democrats. The lists were manipulated, the elections’ boxes were stolen and filled with votes, there was physical violence, documents were counterfeited, etc., etc. This evidence was made known by the opposition even to the international institutions. Democrats faced violence everywhere. One of them is the young man you see in the picture. He is Gjon Tomė Gjelaj, from Vukel of Kelmend in Malesi e Madhe. He was born on July 31, 1982. His family was anticommunist. His grandfather, Gjergj Nika was a political prisoner, his father’s uncle, Ujkė Nik Gjelaj and his three counsins, Dedė Gjeloshi, Zef Lula and Fran Gjoka were executed without a process, by the never seen before, communist genocide during the regime of Enver Hoxha. He was in the spotlight of the dicatorship, to be eliminated. From 1946 until 1990, when political pluralism begun in Albania, this family suffered a wilde medieval genocide. Since the beginning of 1990, this family was one of the first involved in the democratic movements o overthrow the communist atheist regime, as inhuman and blood-thirsty. Tomė Gjelaj, the father of Gjon, was an activist and a commissioner of the DP in alla the elections, since 1991. After 1997, when the social-communists uzurped violently the power, the life of this family was threatened several times. The young Gjon Gjelaj has givven a precious contribution on establishing the democracy in Albania. This is why he became a target of the dark segments of the ill-famed security of the fascist state, that executed over 6000 innnocent albanians in the last 6 years. Many times, this family suffered the violence and inspection of the political police, a tool of crime. Gjon Gjelaj suffered violence by the police, that had arrested and beaten him barbarily, while the signs on his face and on the fore-head are a bad record as the sign of a claim, maybe for his lifetime. Even his brother, Nikė Gjelaj suffered a beastly violence and is forced now to live hidden, while Gjon has no address since the elections of October 12. He is either hidden, or escaped from his country, for which he and his family did a great sacrifice to prepare a democratic ground without injustice, violence, revenge, crimes, or he is even missing.

Behold the reality of the Albanian life, where the freedom of the democrats is violated and their life is in danger, while their country is often even their grave.

    Violence prevails

The local elections of October 12 showed once again that Albania is not free, that violence and incidents, explosive and stolen votes determine even who is going to have the local power. In a voting center  in Himara was placed explosive by KOzma Pelo, member of the Human Rights Party, a police officer and two other citizens were wounded, while the Greek flag waved in clear violence of the Albanian Constitution. Gun was put at the head of the deputy of the DP in Velipoja of Shkodra, Valetin Palaj, while K.Ē. and S.P., two police officers tried to steal 100 voting papers. These incidents, as well as the attempt to eliminate Miri Kraja, a commissioner of the DP in Shkodra and other incidents reported by the Albanian opposition to the international institutions, give the worst sight of this campaign, while the will of the sovereign people is not only disregarded but even violated. The house of Miri Kraja was even burned up. The life of true Albanian democrats is going through these dangerous troubles. Since a child, Miri was involved in the peaceful protests against dictatorship, for he was born in an anticommunist family. His uncle, Shefqet Kraja, was in a political prison for seven years, seven months, seven weeks and seven days during the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. In April 2, 1991, Shefqet and Flamur, his son wounded with a bullet, and Miri, his nephew, were protesting for the votes stolen by Ramiz Alia. Four people were shot dead in those protests and now Bujar Bishanaku, Nazmi Kryeziu, Besnik Ceka and Arben Broci are martyrs of democracy. Other 163 were wounded, and Miri Kraja was knifed twice at dhe right side of his belly, but he survived by God’s sake. He and Jasemina Kraja, his wife, did not escape revenge and threats even a few days after the elections of October 12. They left Albania like many others, who feel hopeless to live here. Those who violated the votes are violating every day the life of the good democrat people, darkening their hope for better days.

    The doves of religions’ reappearance

In that unforgettable day of October 19, during the Mass for the Sanctification of Mother Teresa, held by the Pope, John Paul II in the Saint Peter’s Square in Vatican, we were there and brought to the readers the full picture of that greatness, through the reportage “The sanctification of Mother Teresa drew Albania nearer to God”. When the Pope was uttering the blessed words for Albania, we were thinking about the drama of the Albanian people that was oppressed throughout history, though being too religious. Many martyrs came out from Albania, yet it kept the faith, though under pressure and threats by the dictatorship used by the atheist rulers. After 1967, when churches and mosques were closed, exactly 153 clergymen were executed. Many believers were imprisoned, killed or just threatened. The Catholics were mostly on target. The family of Broz Zadrima was one of the Albanian families in opposition to the communist-atheist dictatorship. This is one of the families that mostly kept the traditions as well as supporting the democratic movements since the beginning of 1990. Broz Zadrima and the members of his family were active helpers in the process of religion’s reappearance, in the fist mass celebrated on November 11, 1990, by Dom Simon Jubani at the “Rrmaji” Cemetery. During the dictatorship were executed hundreds of clergymen and Dom Marin Shkurti, a friend of the family of Broz, was one of them. With this religious spirit, as Mother Teresa, the greatest of this earth, taught was fed the daughter of Broz, Senkė Zadrima, who was born two years before the fall of communist dictatorship, so it was on Febbruary 7, 1988. She was baptized illegally by Dom Zef Simoni, before democracy came in Albania. This hit the eye of the men of that system, who saw her from the beginning as their enemy, while she was a dove of the religion’s reappearance. There are many others like Senka in Albania, doves of religion, peace ad life, but we’re going to speak about this one. Senka, though too young, even an innocent child, suffered pressure and difficulties. Though she was young, even during the so called years of democracy she experienced horrendous scenes of persecution by the secret structures of dictatorship. Her father was several times nearer to death than life, while those secret structures reminded him the baptism of his daughter before pluralism and “democracy” came. When the innocent dove grew up, those same structures had arranged for a long time and tried to kidnap and use her. They were three persons, unidentified, as it is seldom occurring in Albania. They could kidnap a friend of her, while Senka, thanks God, escaped as there was people around. None knows about the destiny of her friend, kidnapped in that dark September. She might be either on the streets of Europe, or dead. Senkė Zadrima was forced, however to leave school since very young, as she was on the sixth grade, and go far away, very far, somewhere by her relatives in the Occidental countries, to live her life safely.

People living shut-in and blood-feud are still the most concerning problem of the Albanian society

We’ve been treating this problem several times in our journal, making known the concern of hundreds of innocent families living shut-in, mostly in the northern area of the country. Many conflicts, like those of property, revenge and blood-feud cause many families to live shut-in.

In this case we’re going to tell about an incident that caused some families to live shut-in.

As a result of the conflict, Engjėll Pashuk Pemaj, born in Dajē of Shkodra on February 7, 1970, now married, had to live shut-in along with his family and relatives. His father, Pashuk Pemaj, was the author of the incident against Vehbi Beqi, from Mushan of the Municipality of Dajē. The incident occurred on February 5, 1998, while Vehbi Beqi, riding his motorcycle crashed to the vehicle driven by Pashuk Pemaj. Since that day, three families Pemaj had to live shut-in fearing the revenge of the family of the victim.

On June 15, 2003, members of the family Beqi menaced Silvana Pemaj, Engjėll’s wife, saying that they would avenge against her family.

On August 24, 2003, three people on a white Mercedes tried to kidnap Silvana Pemaj, but without success. Silvana says that one of them was a member of the family Beqi.

Besides the fact of a family living shut-in, what mostly hits the eye is the other fact that avenges goes as far as the attempt to kidnap even women. However, the most innocent in these cases are the children. Only in Shkodra’s District, hundreds of children have to leave school, as they are menaced and their life is unsafe. How long is it going to last? We will keep on reporting these cases in our newspaper.

Socialist bring back dictatorship in Kelmend

After the socialists got the power through violence with the revolution of 1997, they are becoming as dangerous, cruel and blood-thirsty as their fathers, who ruled during the 50 years of communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. They cannot forgive Kelmend for their very first anticommunist rise in the Eastern Europe after the World War II. Since they came back on power, beastly violence is being used on all the democrats of the anticommunist “castle” of Kelmend.

The Youngman in the picture is Pėllumb Marash Rrukaj. He was born in the village Brojė of Kelmend, on July 2, 1974. His family is patriotic and his forerunners fought communist since 1945. After that, until 1990, his family went through great misery and sufferings because of their anticommunist convictions.

During the great changes, the family of Marash Rrukaj joined the democratic and progresist forces led by Sali Berisha. Pėllumb becomes member of the DP in 1994 and was elected chairman of the Youth Forum in the village Brojė. After 1997, Pėllumb is at the head of the democratic efforts to report the newly arrived on power, which he called new communists, blood-thirsty and sons of dictatorship. Because of his activity beside of democratic forces, certain structures of the state involved in crimes, pressure on him through anonymous letters and threatening phone-calls. During the general and local elections, Pėllumb was the chairman of the voting center, where the democrats were always winners. On January 17, 2002, Pėllumb was mistreated by armed civilians. After insulting and beating him, they menaced to kill him and left him on a street far from home. People passing by, found Pėllumb and sent him at the hospital of Tamara, where he got the first aid and his wounds were cured. That same day, his family takes him and after a while, frightened by the pressures, he leaves Albania, definitely. Pėllumb is not the only. There are hundreds of young people from Kelmend, who leave their country to escape violence, persecution and even execution by the new socialist-communists now ruling Albania.

    The heavy hand of dictatorship

Nothing can stop the heavy hand of socialists in Albania. The situation is getting even heavier. The people is the direct witness of this situation that is causing everyone who lives here to have no breath, as this country seems  to have the bad seed of socialist-communist curse. This was testified by the last local elections of October 12, 2003, when the situation was really heavy. Nowhere in the world can ever happen as it did in Albania, where 100 of votes are stolen at the sight of everyone. This happened by the Forestal School. There were two police officers along with the secretary of the Socialist Party, Tren Xhabia, who wanted to overthrow the situation.

This caused a great chaos and the voting stopped for several hours, until the intervention of the representatives of the Democratic Party and other right winged forces, until the new sign was brought. There were even other problems in Shkodra, and in other voting centers there was interruption of voting. There was noticed even physical violence.

This was not the only voting day when such situations happened. The people does not forget the 24 June 2001, when the overseers of the center nr. 5 of the district “Guerrile” were mistreated, and one of them was Gjin Camaj, for who was told even in the news of that time and the Democratic Party had protested. Gjin was active even before to protect the free life, away from manipulations and corruption as it happens now every day. He was mistreated simply because he was protecting the free vote and did not want the elections to be manipulated. Mistreatments against such people are not for one single day, but threats go on until they are forced to leave Albania, as their life and their family is in serious danger. This is what happened to the democrat Gjin Camaj, and this is what happens to all the anticommunists.

Death threats to the democrat family Bakalli

The family Bakalli is one of the most known families in Albania as far as their contribution on democratic developments in various moments of our history is concerned. They didn’t spare anything for the country. The family of Lulzim and Lirije Bakalli from Shkodra is the most prominent representative of these values. This family started a trade activity since 10 years ago, when the time of true democracy started in Albania, when the Democratic Party was on power. Lulzim and Lirije didn’t hesitate to sponsor various activities and shows during the campaigns of the Democratic Party. The “winter” of the neo-communist dictatorship of 1997, brought a freezing cold all over Albania, particularly to Shkodra and especially to one of the most democratic families, like that of Lulzim and Lirije Bakalli. Even their children, Belma, 14 years old, Nensi 10 years old and Jeton 6 years old, were feeling year after year the weight of this open persecution, menaces by the State and people around it. Their business built with their hard work was menaced several times, and the life of the entire family was in danger. Nevertheless the democrats didn’t hang back. After an active participation in the parliamentary campaign of 2001, the couple Lulzim and Lirije Bakalli joined the electoral team of the candidate for the Mayor of Shkodra, the vice-chairman of the DP, Artan Haxhi. It was then when they faced the clearest insults and menaces from the clique on power. The repression of the State, with or without uniforms, particularly increased after October 12, 2003, when the Democratic Party won the office of Mayor of Shkodra, through the candidate, Prof. Dr. Artan Haxhi. Lulzim and Lirije Bakalli became a target to be eliminated, as they were amongst the most enthusiastic supporters and sponsors of the campaign. This is why the implacable democrats, Lulzim, 45 years old and Lirije, 40 years old, along with their three children, have their life in serious danger in their birthplace. They’re a target for the clique on power, like the other democrats.

Lek Ulaj, commissioner of the Democratic Party, faced violence defending their votes

A few days have passed since the local elections of October 12, 2003. As the “Shqipėria Etnike” newspaper is a periodical every two weeks, many problems and complains have come to our editorial office during these days, asking to come closer to watch and make evident all the violence used on October 12, 2003, by the Socialist Party on power towards the commissioners representing the DP. A similar case is that of Mr. Lek Ulaj, from the village of Bogė of Shkrel in Malėsi e Madhe, who faced violence and threats on that day of October 12, 2003, at 19.00, right the time when the voting boxes were closing at the Voting Center Nr.1, in the village of Bogė. Lekė Ulaj didn’t allow the structures of the Socialist Party and the Security of State to manipulate the elections’ results at the voting center where Lek Ulaj was defending the votes won by the candidate of the Democratic Party. This is also sustained by the medical document accompanied by a declaration of the branch of the Democratic Party in Malėsi e Madhe, spread for the press since October 13, 2003. Lek Ulaj, the commissioner of the Democratic Party was beaten and received death threats, only because he wanted to defend the free vote, against the thieves and the Mafiosi of the Socialist Party on power. Pressure and surveillance on him didn’t stop, for he is one of the most active members of the Democratic Party, becoming its member since 1994. Lek was distinguished for participating in all the peaceful protests organized by the Democratic Party in Albania, reporting from time to time the corruption of today’s governors who did their best to manipulate the elections of October 12, 2003, whose victim is also the democrat commissioner, Lek Ulaj.
